PNG Layers

Whenever I bring in an SVG and try to save it as a layered PNG nothing. It shows to be 3 layers and I don't group it (thought that might be the problem)
I've tried saving it as True color, True color+ Alpha, Interlaced, Transparent, Export each layer to a file of it's own and all combos I can think of with no luck.
Am I asking the impossible?

Not 100% sure about this but I believe in order to save a PNG with layers, the image objects need to be on separate layers.

Nope, I was wrong. You can export a PNG with the option that each layer exports as a separate file. But you already know this.

Photoshop PSD will export layers and retain the layer name.

a layered PNG is not a standard PNG file format - the only program I can recall supporting such was fireworks

And Fireworks version was more of a hybrid that supported bitmap and vector as I recall.

yes it was PNG but not as we know it
