Default Xara Designer Pro+ Update 21.2.0.62177

    WebP Import
Designer Pro+ can now import WebP images as well as export them. As with other image file types, you can simply drag and drop a WebP image file onto your document from Explorer, or use File > Import to browse for your WebP file.

Good, but somewhat confused. I experimented importing various webp files. some import fine but others raise a box stating this image would be better converted to jpg.... Why?

I attach a link to an image I downloaded from Unsplash.

If I import it to XaraPro+ then save it as first an 80% jpg (jpg.jpg) it reports a size of 144Kb
    If I export it as a webp @ 80% (webp.webp) it reports a size of 41Kb

However if I open a new page and import jpg.jpg it reports a file size of 143Kb which I'd expect.
But when I import webp.webp I'm informed it would be better imported as a jpg, which I ignore. The Bitmap gallery reports it as 7Mb !!!

I attach a link to the original Unsplash image I downloaded as a jpg (1920 x 1282px) LINK

good question with a webp - often happens with a png which you can switch out in the registry with optimisejpegfrompng set to 0 should you be intelligent enough to make a descision for yourself - be interesting to see if that works with webp

there is a case for converting some png, but not webp?

Agreed And why is the webp image being reported at such a big file size?

There is also a setting in XaReg not to show the notice about JPEG

@Egg, it's never about size, it's what you do with it.

Yes, I got a similar internal size but Xara converts all into full 24-bit BMP images as it always has done.
If you re-export or Preview/Publish, the WebP is dramatically smaller again.

But it shouldn't. Now we have three options, jpg, png & webp there's no excuse to report as 24-bit BMP's.
Further we shouldn't be getting a dialogue saying it's better to import as jpg.

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.
