    Default .htm issue

So the client worries that her old site once deleted and I upload the xara site. The / ending in her old site url, will not lead visitors to the .htm
meaning any old links in google that end with / will not go to the .htm

The old site that is being taken down is wordpress.

Then make sure that the file extension is the same for the new site. So if the old site's extension is html then change the home page of the new site to index.html and all pages will export as .html

The can be browser issues if someone goes to page.htm and the actual file name is page.html

And if a browser finds two pages, index.htm and index.html (and this may have changed, I'm not sure) even if the index.htm is newer, the browser will load the index.html file.

Thanks Gary, but the old site is in wordpress. I have no clue what extension those pages are. Also the issue is the / symbol that i mentioned.
The .html or .htm on a wordpress site does not work, they all end with /

I think this helps, 301 redirect.

I have set a 401 page, would that be enough?

Behzad: Wordpress sites do not usually use a file extension, though you / they could reference an HTM or HTML page. They are always lower case names, separate words with dashes, unless they didn't use Permalinks, in which case the files may just be a page number. As I recall, the files and extensions used are referenced in an RSS file called a WRS or WRX (I forget). That file should tell you all the resources you'll need to recreate it. While I believe Wordpress pages are HTML, if they've used extensions, there may be a lot of supporting code files and code references.

    I hope you mean 301.

I assume you have placed the 301 redirect into the WP .htaccess file.

You have not advised what the old WP site top level URL is or that of its successor.

Guidance is going to be rather haphazard, at best.

I think the trick is not to delete the WP site until you know what to do.

Well the old wordpress site is globaltrainingsolutions.ca
I am deleting this whole site which was done with wordpress and replacing it with xara one. All pages will have the same name.

    I have not setup 301, I have done 404

I will be deleting the wordpress site altogether, there will be no redirecting of pages. The new xara site will replace the old website under the same domain name.

Well you could then add a meta redirect in the 404.htm page to immediately go to the new index.htm.
The 404.htm still needs a click link to the new index.htm.

A .htaccess redirect might not go amiss either.

It is remarkable how a viewer can hit a site in the most roundabout way.
