Default Cool little 3D photo app

I used to take two photos with my digital camera and then my phone from about 3" apart. And that created a stereo photo like the old stereoptican photos.

But there's a cool little app called i3DSteriod for iPhone and 3DSteroid for Android phones. It has access to your camera and lets you take two photos and then it combines them into a stereographic image. I added an overlay to the stereo-pair in Xara (color below) and applied a Flat, Color transparency to create the sepia tone.

Stare at the two photos and relax your eyes until the two images become three. The image in the center will be in 3D.

No, because the large you make it the harder it is to see. Parallax.

Lovely, got it right away. Must be due to years of practice looking at air photo stereo pairs. I must try this out.

John - When I was in the Army and studying map making at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, we used stereo pairs of terrain to draft contour maps. Brings back memories.

    Gary,

I started looking at stereo pairs in university in the early 70's and continued doing so occasionally during my career in hydro consulting. We would look at stereo pairs with vertical exaggeration and it was quite stunning to see this. I got so that I could hold out 2 adjacent photos in front of me and get my eyes to focus (unfocus) to see the terrain in 3D. Of course, using even the simple pocket type stereoscope helped.

Then came LIDAR and 3D mapping of the ground and top of vegetation, but the air photos were still useful to see what was actually on the ground.

Wow. Didn't know that could be done without a viewer.

    Very effective.

As long as the images don't get too wide.
