All I get is this EXTREMELY annoying message, which I cannot get rid of.

I understand your frustration as I had the same experience each time I started up XDP. But when I realized that I couldn't get rid of the notice, I changed my perspective of powerlessness to one of agency: by clicking 'OK' I, in fact, say 'No' and render their -- albeit insistent -- plea for upgrade money powerless. And when I feel a bit cheeky, I silently add, "Thanks for the reminder." Makes me smile each time.
