    Default Xar Thumbs

Just migrated files to a new computer, which is all very shiny and wonderful etc., but .Xar files only show as icons rather than thumbnails. I've twiddled about attempting to register the thumb.dll to no avail. You would imagine it's not that big a deal but now I've got folders full to bursting with little purple X's and it's so much harder to spot what you're looking for. Anyone any suggestions for a fool proof; emphasis on the 'fool', to get little pictures back?

is it just xar files - if you don't see thumbnails for JPG/PNG etc either it may be a windows file explorer setting

In W10, open the folder and with the Ctrl key down spin your mouse wheel.
Do you then move through all the necessary Views?

The top menu - W10 Explorer > View > Layout can also be used. Try Tiles.

No thumb.dll registering necessary. This might not work if Xara is 64-bit and you are trying to register a 32-bit dll.

type folder options into windows search, to open the control panel / folder options panel - on view tab make sure 'always show icons, never thumbnails' is not ticked

I'm afraid I tried that first but it makes no difference, other than to the size of the icon obviously.

Okay we can all breathe again, if anyone was holding their breath that is. I opened a command prompt as administrator and ran this little miracle: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Designer Pro X\17\XaraDLLs\XarThumb64.dll" and once the PC had restarted and thought about for a moment or two, thumbnails had returned.

I was confused when you mentioned thumb.dll and not Thumb64.dll, otherwise I would have suggested regsrv32 as well.
What i don't know is why you needed it in the first place.

A Run as administrator ought to have done it all automatically.
