Default the logic evades me == need education

having a hard time getting my head around this
    ie desktop page size eg 1200 x 800 \
(yes -- odd -- But I like working in 'even numbers schemes')
and the mobile variant size is suggested as 480 px
    BUT
most smartphones have WAY HIGHER pixel count than most desktops
    ergo
my smartphone never sees the mobile variant(s) I make
I only see them when I resize the desktop browser
    (ie not full screen)
    CLEARLY
    I am missing something (somewhere)
    help ??

Here is a guide to the popular mobile resolutions in 2019: https://deviceatlas.com/blog/most-us...en-resolutions. There are many other reports, but this is a good guide.

I use 480px and 1200px; maybe consider Export Options/ Scale-to Fit-Width with the Maximum Width same as page width. I have tested these resolutions on various mobiles including the compacts.

Change the suggestion to something that works for you.
I doubt anyone would use 480px anyhow.

If you expect the SmartPhone to be used in Landscape then design a bigger Variant that is smartphone-friendly in a larger width to your Main or repurpose your Main to be the simpler smartphone presentation.

The browser viewport size (css size) is not the same as the device size in pixels. Browser window sizes are 'virtual' and not the same as the pixel size of the display. In the past they used to be equivalent, but as pixel densities have increased, they have changed. This allows a web page designed for a low-density device to work on a high-density device too. If they did not use virtual pixels (points) then on higher density devices the page would shrink into the corner of the display.

[ edit: Consequently for images to be crisp on higher density displays the image needs to be larger in pixel size than the CSS points they are sized to one the page. For example a image of 100x100 points should be at least 200x200 pixels (or more) in size to stop them looking fuzzy on higher-density displays. ]

ok -- that answers the missing 'logic - thanks!
so, per this and ACORN above -- how should I set my mobile site variant
(which needs to be viewed vertically)

    thanks all!

You'll see from the link that I sent you that the smallest width currently used is 320.

It also shows the current viewport size at the top, if that's what the op wants to design for.

Indeed, but it's the devices our users use that count not necessarily the devices we actually use.

Absolutely, but from how I read it the op also wants a variant that will work on his/her phone spec.

well . ... was just using my phone as a means to TEST the process
and as I have a samsung 8+with SUPER hi res
    (as are most smartphones)
    the 'logic' was not logical
it did not work at 800
    but does work at 480
and my main resolution is 1000 (my bad -- thought higher in OP)
so from what I think I learned
XARA make the cross over at about 1/2 between the 2 pages
    anyway
at 480 -- can now see on my cell
    again
    thanks to all
