    Default the footer?

If I start with a simple template, there is a long rectangle at the bottom that acts as a footer
(eg when I slide it down the page, it auto lengthens the page)
but if I make a new page, and add my own rectangle
and slide IT down - it just slides off the bottom of the page
and tried header and footer in the help - no luck
so, the trick is .... ??

The easiest thing to do is to modify the footer from the template.

From scratch, right click on the footer object or group and select Auto Fit To Page.

Press Help in the Auto Fit to Page menu for an explanation of the various features.

Help in all Xara's menus is context sensitive and provides options and explanations for the items covered in that particular menu.

    seems simple
    tried as you said
    did nothing

    made rectangle
rt click auto fit to page
    selected bottom middle
    saved
    still acts as before
ie on-page preview stays exactly where I place it manually

Place the rectangle at the bottom of the page and then alter the page height. The rectangle should follow the page.

If you selected as Gary suggested the rectangle will stay relative to the bottom of the page. If you have it 2cm above the bottom of the page and alter the page height, the rectangle will remain 2 cm above the bottom.

Move the rectangle to the bottom of the page. Set the position to Bottom & Centre. Now reduce or leghten the page. Your rectangle will move up or down the page as required. If you leave the rectangle 100px above the page bottom it will remain 100px above the page bottom if you shorten/lengthen the page.

ok -- will test some more == I had already tried
BELOW the end of page marker
ABOVE the end of page marker
1/2 over/under the end page marker

silly me -- did not try (yet) in the correct place

    ok ==
    it works (sort of)
I put the rectangle on the bottom - in place
    and rt click etc
now as I move the bottom of page marker
the footer box slides with it - nice
    BUT
when I have a box from a template
when I move the box - it drags the end of the page with it
    but not now
    * this is not a big deal - I can easily work around this
I just want to know as many of the fine points of programming as can
    thanks!

That's because the footer is set to Push. See second attachment here.
