    Question Creating a Brush?

I want to create a brush of circles. Circles of line and not fill.
So, what I'm doing is listed below:

    Draw a circle
Set fill to none and line to 2px
    Select ‘Freehand and Brush Tool’
    Select ‘Create Brush’
    Enter your brush name
Set 'Type of brush:' to 'Scatter brush'
    Select 'Create'

    Now use the brush

Select the newly drawn brush with the ‘Freehand and Brush Tool’
    Select 'Edit Brush'
    Select the 'Fill Properties' tab
Select 'All brush colours' under 'Local colours replace:'
    Select 'Save'.

Having done all that, why can't I now change the colours of the circle line to what I want?

I'm sure I've done this before or am I just dreaming?

    OK.
    Please don't bother!

I need to 'Convert line to shape' before creating the brush.

I would have deleted the post, if I could have!

But, then again, someone else might learn from my momentary lapse. Or brilliance in being able to work it out!

but I have to ask, does it persist?

when I do this [following your steps, including convert line to shape], and come to use the brush again it has reset itself to 'named brush colours' - despite being 'saved'

which is why, if I were creating a scatter brush, I would create it with a named colour in the first place

then it will draw in what ever colour is the default colour, and you can change it afterwards if you wish, no need to edit the brush fill properties

    Well, Steve.
I re-opened the file where I had created the brush > drew a line > applied the brush to that line > tried to change the colour > would not do it.
Had to go to Edit Brush and reselect 'All brush colours' again.
After that you can change the colour of the brush.

So, I would say that it doesn't persist.

thanks rik for confirming that, I have not used scatter brushes in xara for a long time, and so i thought maybe you might have done something I had forgot

for anyone interested, here is a brush made the same way as yours, including convert line to shape, except with a named colour which means the second part of your proceedure is not necessary

this brush will pick up the set colour before you draw - and you can change the colour afterwards, and it will persist

Maybe brush colour option not persisting might be because it cannot handle both a fill and a line colour.

When I made a brush from a shape that had a 16pt line, then drew a line with the new brush and checked the colours in the colour editor, they were both shown as the same colour.

Slightly confusingly when changing the line colour of the brush using the colour editor, technically it's the fill colour that changes colour not the line!

could be, way back, xara used to have line and fill colour totally separate - then they changed this in their nanny way so that when you draw a line it picks up the same colour as that set for fill, which they claimed was less confusing for newbies

now you mention it i seem to recall this messed up the brushes in some way - there's a long thread somewhere...

any way named colour brush as i posted was the way i remember getting round it..
