    It is just showing 16x16 gapped tiles as the concept.

    The way I see the original(or maybe the way I would do it) is it using a photo with the highlights or lens flare on it. The sphere and squares are using a transparency to show the photo high lights with some squares being more of a solid color like in Egg's example.

    I found that the Mould Tool Spherical envelope never quite does the job. Here is a ancient Workbook tutorial for how to create a vector spherical effect. http://archive.xaraxone.com/webxealo...kbook%205.html

    Distorted image is hard to get quite right and the perspective will always look little distorted.

    This was made with 3D software in couple minutes for a comparison purposes.

    Reflections are from HDRI image mapped inside sphere, that was made camera invisible.

    For a bitmap version, make a square bitmap, high resolution and apply an Photo Tool > FX > Distortion Bump/Dent -100
