Sad to say, but they Serif have done it right. They did not just stick on new features with duct tape. I will probably continue to publish in Xara in spite of its shortcomings because I can do it in my sleep. But Affinity have certainly set the bar very high. I get the feeling that they understand the entire publishing process and have designed a product around that knowledge.

That said, does anybody know how to get a spread to display as a spread and not as a single page?

In Document Setup (right above Master Pages when nothing selected) or when creating a New Document it lets you check Facing Pages.

    Basically what Egg is showing

I think the lack of e-pub is a disadvantage, but hopefully that will come through soon

I purchased Publisher and like what I see, especially at that price.

    The price is, for sure.

Better or worse is subjective. Make your own decision using the trial.

If the product does what you need it to do, it's better. If it doesn't it isn't.

I bought the product for the same price as one month of Adobe subscription.

I have been getting to know Affinity Publisher. And while it certainly has every feature one could possibly want, there is much to be said about the directness and simplicity of Designer Pro.

That said, Affinity Publish can truly call itself a publishing program. I've just started a new book project and I am going to continue the project in Designer Pro because of the speed and familiarity but after this project I plan to spend a lot more time with AP.

I suggested to Xara a few years ago they create an app primarily for indie book publishers because this is becoming a tremendous growth industry. The current "update" shows how seriously they took my suggestion.
