Now, it is possible to remove the block text boxes commonly found on the slider widgets?

Likely depends on the Xara slider widget; you can for the Slideshow 2 Widget (chequered box transition) and for the Nivo Slider Widget (maybe others too).

Open up the Widget Page & Layer tab, look for the text column and rectangle objects on the MouseOff layer, delete them. Do this for each slide, or duplicate the page of one you have changed and delete the others. Test it with a couple of slides to check it works first, load your slides, save and close the Widget.

Exercise some caution because you may cause the widget to change its behavior or fail.
