I've not seen it done using Xara - maybe because its not possible. Maybe this is a challenge.

Is it possible to wrap a bitmap fill round a sphere? And by that I mean so you get the correct visual edge distortion as the fill pattern reaches the visual horizon.

Can achieve the desired result using a ray tracer, but hell - I just bought Xara!

You could try my Spherical Mould filter in the Shareware Xone. I think Gary's created an example of what you're talking about.

If you also use the Emboss plug-in to create a 'bump map', you can apply it to the fill as a transparency to add texture.

I wanted to divorce, and go back to CorelDraw, but couldn't...

So here I am back.

Yes, it can.
1/import bitmap
2/trace bitmap
3/mould to circle
4/draw another circle with the same dimensions.
5/make this second one a sphere in shadowy (blueblack) hues to pure white.
6/put it on top of the bitmap (be patient as Xara needs to calculate)
7/ make a little sphere with transparent edges in, in this case yellowy green and put this on the highlight.
8/ create the reflection by combining two spheres to get a moon of greenish yellowblue
9/ play with transparancies, feathering etc
10/ group and export as Jpeg or Tiff

(wanting to play further, I pushed Xara over the limit and had a crash. so no xar to be posted. unluckily)

but I saved the bitmap. The jpeg loses some quality, but still gives an idea. the xar would have been better as i would have been able to change the dimensions etc

enjoy

For small images you could use the technique described

here

And with more details in the original thread.

Eric

I'm glad you did not defect to CorelDRAW :-)

But, tracing images is a pain in the butt.

Sean's SS-Mould tool is quick and it is easy. If you don't like the results, hit Undo and try another setting.

Thanks, Gary.

But correct me if I am wrong: I wouldn't use a bitmap filter because it has to adapt the bitmap mosaic and eliminate a lot of pixels, resulting in unsharp borders. When tracing the bitmap, you work with vectors, and these can be reduced in size without loss.

But I will install the plugin anyway... I thought these plugins were for CXara, not X
