Trouble with two-color fill

I am having trouble figuring this one out, although I realize it is likely very easy to do. I have large block of text using 62 pt Arial Bold font. What I want to do is have the top half of the line of text in red, and the bottom half of the same line of text in green, with a slight fade from red to green where the colors come together.

After selecting the fill tool, the corresponding drop down menu lists various options such as Flat, Linear, Three Color, etc. I don't see an option for using just two colors. I've experimented with all of these options, but can't get anything to work the way I am looking for.

Can someone suggest how to create a fade from one color to another color, with the top half red and the bottom half green? Many thanks.

There are many ways to do what you want so I've posted the simplest way and also a way you might find useful in the future using Opacity Masks. Pull the .xar files to pieces and you can see how it is done.

John, just to update you on the text. My bad, I didn't show how to make text with an opacity mask.

Select the text, then select the Fill Tool. Click on the text and drag from top to bottom, or bottom to top, or side to side or...

Click on the start or end control point (the small square) and then select a color from the screen palette.

Another method is to lay a rectangle over black text on a white background and apply a Flat, Screen (Bleach) transparency.

To follow up on Gray's post, the amount of fade crossover can be controlled with the PROFILE button.

and to follow keith the PROFILE button will not work for fill gradients that have more than two colours - so ok here, but just so you know..btw some would say you don't need to ever use more than two colours: say if you want three you can make it from two twos, both ways have their pros/cons...
