Bug DTP fails in Exporting Tables & Text Inside to MS Word

    Dear Xara...

You have created solutions that are not compatible with MS Word for Tables and Text Inside.

Tables are not exported as tables as understood by MS Word and therefore cannot be manipulated with MS Word within the definition of adding a row, column, repositioning cells, changing cell colour styles and the like.

Text Inside does not accurately make it into MS Word by either copy & paste or Export as docx.
The former loses the text completely. The latter just does half a job.

On first export, you get a dialog warning that the design does not have Word compatible formatting.
There is a button choice to Convert and review. Nothing happens with this.

Forced to a second document, if you use the Convert and export button, you find the text is foreshortened but the not visible part is there.
It seems to export the text as aligned but nothing further.

Having chosen two options, the dialog is no longer available. Seemingly too for other document Exports for that Xara session (or ever, so far).

It is also disappointing that Text Inside and probably most new features are so off from being backward-compatible with earlier versions; an unstressed Xara USP that I have always applauded.

Sadly, even a simple text line fails when it extends off the page.
If the line is long enough, Xara chosen to wrap the line but at a random point.

    Hi Acorn,

Thanks for your feedback, please be aware that the table SmartShape is however a work in progress, and currently being improved. It was released knowing that there were some usability issues still to be addressed, but released on the basis that it was useful enough to some people to use for their purposes now.

However it should be possible to open and edit a table in Word that has been created in Xara, if that is not the case could you give an example?

    Thanks,
    Stephen

Stephen, the Xara Export to docx does not produce a table; it is a collection of shapes and styled text. Each can be manipulated but not as required were it an MS Word table.
The example of importing Table 07 and exporting to docx is all I did today, other than rejecting the font install of Muli.

There are far more than "some usability issues" already reported. You may have sight of an alpha v15.2 but it is still nowhere in view for us with 237 days between v15.0 and v15.1.
At v15.1, your Smart Tables do not cover data import. The exports to HTML and MS Word, are not tables.

I even went to the trouble of creating a Xara widget ('HTML Table.xwr') using TableGenerators.com, https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...w-Table-Widget, which is immediately usable without a Xara Desktop program update...
...which fails my export needs as Xara Export to docx returns a picture. Instead, I have to preview my table in the Widget and copy & paste from there into MS Word.

I keep on deferring the update of my Xara websites.

    Hi Acorn,

You're right that the Word export doesn't work currently. We know that the table SmartShape has limited functionality, however we have had lots of reports from people who have found it useful and are using it, which was the purpose of us releasing it.

Internally, the table SmartShape has progressed significantly, so you should see the improvements in the next release.

    Regards,
    Stephen
