    Deadline day upon me ... I make final changes to the ad, then try to export only to see:
    ACCESS VIOLATION EXCEPTION AT OFFSET 0X001C5DC0.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    I'm afraid the only suggestion is to start over.

    The older versions of Xara used to create a BAK file in the Temp folder but for some reason, this was left out of Xara X.

    Some people save their file twice with different names in case something like this happens so all your hard work is not lost.

    Other people have said they save every fifteen minutes with a diffent name (e.g. myfile1.XAR, myfile2.XAR, myfile3.XAR) so they can go back to a previous version of the file if need be.

    Not much consolation I am afraid.

    I have notices that the longer you go without saving your work, the greater the likelihood of a crash like this. It is a good habit to get into, save your work and save often.

    There might be the most recent version of that .xar file with a temp name. You can open it and resave it. You might have to do some more work, but at least you won't be back at the beginning.

    I hope Xara will fix this. Crashing on save is annoying and multiple names for the same file is a waste of disk space.

    to force XARA X to create bak files:

    Modify your registry as follows:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\XaraX\Version 3.0\Options\Filters

    Change "MakeBakFiles" from 0 to 1"

    So you don't have to rename your files, just hit CTRL+S from time to time ;-}

    huh? I didn't reboot for weeks now, and still have no trouble with XARA X. At least on my system it's stable like Linux... and I really torture it ;-}

    Jens beat me to this one. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

    COMPLETELY SAFE and works like a charm. The really neat thing is that XaraX will created the .BAK file right next to the original. If for some reason the original file becomes corrupted (will no longer open) then just change the .bak file extention to .xar and you are set to go. You might have to redo some of the work but it's better than having to start completely over!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

    In order to access your registry simply go to:
    Start/Run/ type in regedit and click OK and once there just follow the path that Jens provided and once you are there simply double click on the registry entry and you will be presented with a little dialog with a highlighted "0", simply type in a "1" and then close out and next time and from here on out XaraX will .bak up all of your files. It's a really nice safegard for sure!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

    Thanks for the tips and encouraging words guys ... I thought all was lost, but luckily my last good .tif export was deemed sufficient so I stuck it on our ftp site and let the publisher download. Will appear in next edition. Next time I'll try to "learn" in my spare time, not on a deadline.

    I would still strongly consider doing that registry tweak so that XaraX creates .bak files for you!! It's better safe than sorry, as the saying goes! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
