Here's an idea, Larry.

When you make your scribble, put it on a white rectangle as a background.
That way, it should be plain to see what it is.

And a straight edge won't be hiding, on the edge!

What I did was:
Increased the line weight to 30px. You've said, that is allowed.
Converted the line to Shape.
Cut the line shape out of the square.

But, if you want to see just the scribble, I've also shown that in red.
