I don't follow Acorn, I can understand R but why would the suite have to be a spade? Why could it not be a diamond or club?

There is convetion that there are Major Suits, Spades and Hearts, and Minor Suits, Diamonds and Clubs in Rubber Bridge and other trick-winning card games.
I discounted Hearts and Ron can't be a minor player, hence Spades.
