    Default Facebook Header Image

    Hi,
I wondered whether has actually made any facebook header images? And if so, which dimensions have you actually used? I tried but although it looks ok in mobile phone it has a big gap at the bottom on a desktop and resolution looks terrible on an iPad.

Thanks for that. I did try searching and found a group "Cover Photo Size Helper" but everyone on that seemed to be saying certain sizes didn't work, etc.

Yes, as Egg notes, 851 x 315, though designing at that size I upload at 200dpi, so 1,702 x 630 and Facebook reduces to the correct size. Same thing with profile pictures.

And I am pretty sure you have the ability to crop the image, so it does not even need to be that exact size. On our stereogram page I have frequently used a larger image and you can slide it around to the portion you want to use.

Gary why don't you save the JPG at 851x315 @ 200DPI. Why make it larger at @92DPI?

    I'm not sure I understand your question Ray. I have a 851 x 315dpi template I use in Xara which is 1:1 at 96dpi.

The only advantage of exporting at 200dpi is in case someone wants to view the image larger than posted. For example our cover image, which we change every week displays at 851 x 315 but if you click the cover image https://www.facebook.com/Eyetricks3DStereograms/ then view full screen, you see a higher resolution version of the image.

    Gary,

I forgot that Xara handles DPI different than most other programs.

I can specify in other graphics programs to have an object 851x315 @200dpi and that is what it is saved as. If you bring the object into other graphics programs it will show that dimension at that dpi. How ever if you bring it into Xara it will show the right dimension but at 96dpi for screen value. If you export out of Xara for 200dpi then it will make the file dimensions 1702x 630 at 200 dpi. If you bring the exported file into other graphics programs then they will display the dimensions as 1702x630 @200dpi.

So this can be real confusing especially when working in print design as apposed to web pages.

What matters is the actual size in pixels.
