Default unable to redirect site to https

    Hello again,

I'm attempting to use a generic SSL assigned to my provider. This is the redirect script they wrote and it is in the secure directory. For reasons beyond my understanding it is just not working. The provider was unable to get it to work and I need a bit of the brain power here to get me pointed in the right direction.

    Redirect / https://www.securewebexchange.com/ta...triclight.com/

    Thanks in advance!

    Have a great day!

Ok, as usual as soon as I post it dawns on me. They put it in the secure directory and it should have been in the public directory. Hope this may help others!

    Have a fantastic evening!

Thanks for following up on that. Can you elaborate on the secure directory vs the public directory?

Hi gwpriester. With all the help I have received here it is nice to be able to contribute. My provider (telus shared hosting) has a set of website tools. The FTP file manager allows access to the files on the site and because I have the advanced package on this account there is another directory named "secure". If someone goes to the non-secure site they will automatically be looking at files in the public directory. The ISP package comes with a generic SSL certificate belonging to securewebexchange.com so you will get a "certificate does not belong to website" error if you simply move your files to the secure directory and try to access the https://www.taylorelectriclight.com secure web. You need to create a file named ".htaccess" as the first file in the public directory and that file contains the text "Redirect / https://www.securewebexchange.com/taylorelectriclight.com/". This way when the browser opens up the http://www.taylorelectriclight.com site you will be redirected to the secure site and because the SSL belongs to the site that redirected it the mismatching error is no longer there.
The only issue that I don't like is that the securewebexchange.com precedes taylorelectriclight.com in the address bar which (in my opinion) is not professional. Thanks to another poster on this fine site I am attempting to create my SSl at https://letsencrypt.org/. I had a quick try yesterday without success, but I'm sure I'll manage to figure it out. When you have your own (sometimes referred to as "vanity") SSL the redirect through securewebexchange.com is no longer required and no longer in the address bar.
    Have a great day!
    Ed
