    Default SSL certificate

    Good day to all,
I'm running into an issue on our website, www.raand.com where customers do not see that our site is secure. I was on the phone all day on Friday with our host, GoDaddy and they said it's possible that the program that I'm using, Xara Web Designer 11 Premium might have some restrictions in preventing the SSL certificate from functioning. I was wondering if anyone one else had run into a similar issue, and what, if anything on Xara's end would remedy a fix.

    Thanks is advance,
    Pete Gregory

Hi Peter. Your link opens up for me without any problem, and no security warning telling me that the site may not be secure. This is not a Xara problem, it is a google problem. Recently Google advised that they would not recognise sites that are not secure sites (not https://), and that they would warn site visitors that the site was not secure and prevent them from opening the site. They also stated that they would demote rankings for websites that are not https, but I would not panic about that just yet as some of my clients who I have yet to move to https sites are still ranking on page one so google have yet to initiate their threat it seems.

My clients websites are all with the same host, and that host has provided all their clients with https sites on their servers for free for several months. After that they need to purchase an SSL certificate for $45 for the year. Do not be conned into purchasing an SSL certificate for a couple of hundred dollars. Cheers, Abi

You already have an HTTPS site (try going to https://www.raand.com). All you need to do is set up an automatic redirection from the HTTP site to the HTTPS one.

On a side note don't be conned into paying anything for an SSL certificate, go to https://letsencrypt.org/ instead.

Peter your host GoDaddy should have told you this.

    Hi Abikadabra,
Thanks for your reply. My issue is we have purchased an SSL certificate. And, when using Chrome, FireFox or IE, our site does not show up as a secure site when you type in raand.com or google raand. I've spoke with our host, GoDaddy, and I've tried multiple web.config's to get the site to recognize the SSL. GoDaddy suggested there may be something in the web developement app preventing this from happening.

Out of curiosity, where can you purchase an SSL for $45?

    Thanks,
    Pete Gregory

yes, our site does work at https://www.raand.com and I've redirected on my side, but what about existing clients that return to our site? Is it just a matter of telling them to empty their web browser cache?

And thanks for the heads up to https://letsencrypt.org/.

    Sincerely,
    Pete Gregory

    Pete,

When I visit your site, it does not automatically redirect to https:, it starts up in plan http:. There is something wrong with your redirect.

    Hi Ray,
Yes I'm aware of that. I've used two different web.config's to redirect, but it still does not seem to be working, and I'm trying to identify the problem

    Thanks,
    Pete Gregory

    Hi Peter

Have you submitted the https website to google via your Google Webmaster account? You will need to do a new sitemap for the https site as google will not recognise the site unless you submit it, and then 'fetch as google' with the new site address.
