Welcome to the conference.

I assume you are trying to make a GIF image with a transparent background?

If you are creating an GIF image that will appear over a colored background, place a rectangle behind your image that is that color. (In the illustration below, the image is a button).

Using the Selector Tool (the arrow pointer) draw a rectangle around everything except the rectangle. This is called Marquee selecting.

Now export as a GIF and make sure the Wineglass icon (directly about the Export button in Xara X) is selected. In the preview window to the left, you should not see a background, only your selected objects.
