    Default Cambridge Ferry

Had a bit of free time lately to do some more drawing which I haven't been doing lately. Here's one of the Train Ferry "Cambridge Ferry". I wanted it in B&W so it could be used in a simple publication.

Great drawing Egg, will add that to my "When ships were ships" collection and not the ugly container ships.

    Thanks for your comments.

I agree totally Stygg. General cargo ships of the first half of 1900's all had character. My favorites were Blue Funnel ships, real workhorse looking vessels.

Every ship you served on held particular special memories, likes and hates. Here's one of my favorites, the "City of Hull" on which I was an apprentice deck officer. I joined her in Liverpool following a very serious jute fire. The trip was to Pakistan & India then return to Europe via the Suez Canal. Shortly after, the canal was closed for a very long time due to the six day war. On return to Liverpool we were paid off and the ship was taken over by Greek owners/crew.

Today all ships look the same, tankers, bulkers & container ships. Characterless

As for the train ferry names they were named after local counties so you had the "Suffolk Ferry" the "Norfolk Ferry" the "Essex Ferry" and finally the "Cambridge Ferry" but at least more imaginative than their predecessors the "Train Ferry 1" ,the "Train Ferry 2" and wait for it ...... the "Train Ferry 3". These earlier ships were very revolutionary in that they were designed to carry rail wagons carrying munitions etc from the UK to the battle front in WWI. Attached photo of the "Train Ferry 1" with dazzle paint in 1917.

Stop "swinging the Lantern" now Egg

I like it Egg. The old ships did have character, but then most old machines in general did. Altogether different today.
