I have downloaded the 30 day trial version of PSP 7 for a test drive and I am lost. I would like to use it to create graphics for my web pages, but am having trouble figuring it out. I have tried using the help section to no avail. Here is what I am trying to do:

I have a grey image of a star in .gif format. I would like to change the color of it to yellow or gold and add a drop shadow effect, then change the background from white to dark blue.

When I open the file in PSP and try to paint the star gold with the fill tool, the color I select paints the entire area, not just the star and the drop shadow effect is not available.

I have many other images I would like to touch up and antialias. Is PSP the program I should be using for this?

I have tried creating a new file and cutting and pasting the star, but it still doesn't work. Please tell me there is an easy way to do this!

I have been reading the help files for a while here and still cannot figure thi out.
    Thanks,
    Deborah

Thank you so much for showing me how to do that. I finally got the star done.

I have already created lots of borders and other graphics for some web pages. Is it possible to bring them into PSP to antialias them? I'm having big trouble tryng to figure how to do that.
Many of them would be impossible to create from scratch.

    Thanks again,
    Deborah

    deborah,

I assume you mean in order to smooth the edges of the pictures? Well I'm not too good on all that but i suppose if you import it and convert it to say, a .jpg it will automatically be antialiased, perhaps you could post some examples to show what you mean. TALKGRAPHICS is brimming with technical boffins who will be able to tell you much better than I.

Deborah, what format are your previous graphics in? Do they already have backgrounds and been saved as gifs and/or jpg's?

Can you post one? There are several different avenues to take...but it depends on how much detail is in the background. One way would be to create a mask to isolate your image...cut away the background...copy and paste the remaining image to a new trasparent background...and then work from there.

You'll find lots of tutorials for PSP...and serveral for masks at

Robin's PSP Resources or .this oneshows how to isolate an image.....

I want to thank everyone for all of their help. I will upload some examples and definitely have more questions.

I have decided to purchase PSP as soon as I can afford it - hopefully next month. There's obviously a lot to learn, but with support from a group such as this will certainly make it a lot easier to learn as well as more fun.
