Something I did in Painter 6 - with, and without, texture added. Can't seem to get a handle on the texture aspect of it...any suggestions that will make it make sense is appreciated! Thanx, Joey

Joey,

I really like your apple painting. Not sure what's puzzling you about textures so if you can maybe give us some specifics we'll be able to offer suggestions. For instance, I don't know whether you want to know about the many ways texture can be applied in Painter and/or if you'd like suggestions for how to use texture in a particular image.

For now, a couple of thoughts are:

If you're going to paint in texture on an object like your apple, it might work best to follow the contours of the apple with each brush stroke.

Also, you could do some interesting things by applying color and texture to the background.

Thanks for sharing your painting with us. Keep up the good work and I hope to see more.

Well...I have not done anything I'm pleased with using impasto. The chapter in the user guide doesn't do much to inspire me ....maybe I need to see how others have utilized this feature to realize it's potential. Maybe??? Any good tutorial
floating around that would give me some pointers?
Any bad tuts, even?????

Thanx, Joey

Joey,

Here are a few links. You can decide if they're good or bad tutorials.

At least, they may give you some ideas. My suggestion is to open a new Canvas, then experiment with each of the Impasto variants to see what they do. Also, choose other brushes and their variants and in the Brush Controls palette's General and Impasto sections, alter the settings to use Impasto depth and see what happens.

In the General section, you can set the Dab Type to, for instance, Rendered or Projected (among many other options), set the Stroke Type, and choose the Source (Color, Gradient, Gradient Repeat, Pattern, Pattern with Mask, or Pattern with Opacity).

In the Impasto section, you can set Draw to: Depth and Color, choose the Depth Method (Uniform, Erase, Paper, Original Luminance.. etc.), check Negative Depth to make the paint stroke appear "carved out" of the Canvas, and adjust the Depth slider to increase or decrease the amount of depth.

These are just a few of the settings you can play with that affect how the Impasto strokes appear.

These include images that are either done with Impasto brush variants or with the Pen's Pattern Pen variants using Impasto settings. Below each image is a description of how they were created. They are all experiments and I posted them on my site to show some of what can be done using Painter's brush variants and settings. They barely begin to tell what we can do!

The samples included with this tutorial include my captured Gingerbread Man brush used both with and without Impasto set Draw to: Color and Depth using Depth Method: Paper.

Experiment and see what you can do using some of these methods and new ones you discover along the way.

Have fun!
