First of all, can I thank you all for your help - I realise it must be frustrating.
I'm worried I may not have been clear about what I am trying to do so ... I have built a website to replace an existing one. It will have the same web address. It needs to include the 'People' pages of the existing site, but that's all.
The existing site was built by someone else on a different computer. She will continue to update her genealogy database and use Second Site to create 'People' pages. I will update the main website.
If I add a 'People' button to my navigation bar and link it to http://www.wonershhistorysociety.co....h2-o/index.htm will it still work? Won't we both be publishing bits to the same web address?
Can you help me with this part of the problem before I start asking you about the actual process of publishing? I can only take in so much in one go!

Jenny, as Egg and i have said, provided you do not publish to the sub-folder that you can publish what you like above it. Just never publish to the Wonersh2-o folder.
Pretend my example http://acorn.xara.hosting/wonersh/ is actually your current top-level site.
Whatever I do to it does not affect anything in any sub-folder, sub-directory or URL path.

So, I need to add 'People' to my site's navigation bar with a link to http://www.wonershhistorysociety.co....h2-o/index.htm. I then publish my site to the host server using the settings for the old site. My new site will replace the old and the 'People' pages will still work because they are still in the sub-folder.
I will be able to publish new/amended web pages from my laptop; the user of the genealogy database will be able to continue to generate people pages on her computer and publish to the sub-folder of what is now the new website.
1. Have I understood correctly?
2. If I wanted to, could I publish the main site to Xara (instead of the other web host) and the other user still be able to publish to the sub-folder?

Phew! That's a relief. Holiday and other things mean I won't be trying this out for a few weeks. If I have problems I hope I can come back to you but in the meantime I am very grateful for the advice you and the others have given.
