Everytime I run my VCom System Suite utility to remove errors in my Windows registry, I loose my Xara X registration number. The next time I open the program after doing a registry cleanup, I have to provide the registration number again. This happened in Win98 and now in Windows XP.

I recently installed Xara's Menu Maker and found this quirk occurs with this program also. The Xara code writers apparently chose to put the registration information in a non-conventional location because I do not have this program with software from any other publisher.

    Anybody else have this problem?

    Hi Bob,

I use Norton System Works to clean the registry on my PC and have never had that problem to occur.

Soquilli, glad to know it doesn't occur with the Norton utilities.

I first suspected my registry cleanup software. But since it happens with the three Xara applications I run on my PC, and it doesn't happen to applications I have published by other companies, I still believe Xara stores the registration information in an unconventional place.

Not sure about that Bob, I just checked out my registry and under Software/Xara/XaraX/Options/UserInfo everything looks fine to me. Company, Name and SerialNo all there.

But then again it is really strange that only the Xara Ltd software is being singled out by the VCom software like that!!

I used to a fan of VCom but the last time I bought and installed the latest version of Partition Commander it was such a mess (mouse driver has been corrupt since version 7.X) so I uninstalled it and gave in and got Partition Magic, I just stay away from the Boot Magic, that software is just evil!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/mad.gif VCom basically told me that they couldn't help me after I begged and begged some more, so that did it for me!!

I also liked their Web page designing software but it crashed and crashed some more, so I gave up on that. A tech named Sean was helping me out and let it out of the bag that the code once belonged to Serif, he was doing double duty helping out VCom in his spare time and is a fully paid tech for Serif. So I now use Serif's PagePlus 9 for my PDF and Web site building needs and it's quite stable!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hope you get all this sorted out Bob!!

Personally, I wouldn't run any programme that automatically does anything with my registry. Registry + unknown tampering = upset.

The fact that it's removing valuable information is a case in point. What other things it doing that you're not immediately aware of?
