Default Gradient Fill on a line?

Do you reckon that we might be able to fill a line with a gradient fill, or the like, without having to convert line to shape first?
Do you reckon this might happen in the very near future?

    Hi Rik,
I know Affinity Designer can do this, but Illustrator cannot. I can't see this as a pressing need really, as once you have your line(s) set up the way you want it doesn't seem unreasonable to convert to a shape to add the gradient. Apart from it being extra steps for one's workflow, but anyway you can always copy your work and save it before committing to the line conversion.
Nice to have the option, I agree, but I'd hate for something like this to divert attention away from something more urgent (like Open Type Support for instance).

Perhaps there ought to be a poll in Dear Xara so that the users here can have feature requests prioritised by what is considered important. (I'm not pooh-pooing your suggestion Rick, it's obviously of concern to your good self.)
    Bob.

There have been, and will be, many occasions when being able to fill a line with a gradient would have been helpful.
And, still retain the ability to change its size.
It's quite a weakness, in my opinion.
Much effort is put into web features, and yet, vector tools are left behind.

Hi Bob. Illy can do this since CS6, have used this about 4 times since it's intro! Like Bob I would have other priorities rather having a gradient on a line as number 1. OK "Open Type Support" would be good even might get me to upgrade again. My big beef is proper vector brushes. It seems such a simple request to be able to edit a line and know it will be still a vector at the end of the edit.
That's the problem with "Wish Lists" no agreement.

You are correct, of course, Peter. I was trying to colour fill an open path, which makes Illy try (unsuccessfully) to fill a non-existent shape, as in the top graphic.
Works well on a closed line around a shape, though - silly me!

Bob, you can use a gradient on an open path in CS6 +.

Illustrator isn't the only program that offers gradient fills for lines.

Creature House Expression, now free as Microsoft Designer, had this feature in 2003.

    It's a really good request.

It seems like this would work with the Xara Live Object and brush coding. The object would remain an editable line but would behave like a shape until converted to a shape.

Can the work arounds be put into the thread that Frances split off the other work arounds to? And then this post deleted at that point?
