I had lot's of fun doing this one.

    Using Line,Color,Transparency..Shadow.

I did this using the 'OLD GEEZER'S MEMORY'. I didn't even look at a photo. I wanted to see how
much I remembered of unforgetable face. I don't
think I'm too far off in his resemblance. I'll see
if I can get a hold of foto. Then I'll do one
    looking at foto,maybe. Oh well...

... the Duke but I do see a great illustration.

The squiggly (sp) lines in the face are they shapes that you fill with colours and transparency to "shade" the image? Your technique looks like a fun and intuitive way to build up an image.

I have to agree with Risto. Does not make me thing of Wayne but it is a very facile use of line and a grand illustration.

Albuquerque is called the Duke City because it was named after the Duke of Alburquerque, Spain. What does this have to do with John Wayne? I'll get back to you on this one (as soon as I can think of a reason for this gratutitous remark :-)

..I don't see how I could have remembered AT LEAST
SOME of his features. Remember...it was ALL FROM THE GREY MATTER. Using the line and color like this has always been one of my favorite media expressions. No, Risto, they are not particular shapes drawn and given their own line. I lay the color down and then loosly 'find' and define the color.

I had read where his dog's name was Duke. Later
for his powerful image on screen he adopted it
for himself. That's what I read, anyway.

    WAS ALL DONE FROM M E M O R Y !!! No fotos..
    no scanning...nada!

William, the eyes (and their gaze) are definitely Wayne's. Would you mind sharing how long it took you to complete the sketching and coloring of the portrait?

Bill - I find it interesting that you think your drawing looks like John Wayne. It seems that you've captured perfectly the 'John Wayne' of your mind's eye. Of course none of the rest of us know how *you* imagine him to look - except we have this image to give us some indication. The John Wayne of my mind's eye doesn't happen to look the same person. I don't presume to think my mind's eye is any more objective than yours.

Notwithstanding the issue of likenesses, I really love the image and it is great to see another example of this unique style of creating portraits. It is stunning. It again shows us your bold and effective use of colour. Those eyes are so intoxicating!

    Regards, Ross

PS - he kinda reminds me of that Italian actor who was in many spagetti westerns. I don't know the name of the guy I'm thinking of.

..for your constructive comments. The first piece took about 3 hrs.

Here is his left eye enlarged. It is how it looked without the lines and final touch ups.

Bill - thanks for posting the blowup. It is interesting to see what you did.

Here's a pic of John Wayne.
