Things I hope I will like from all the info I've gathered

Improved DWG / DXF import and export functionality, I see Corel have implemented libraries from the OpenDWG organization.

The user interface has changed again regarding menu layout, but at least all the options are visible this time, I notice that the envelope, blend, extrude and contour dockers are back in the default UI [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif[/img]

Speed improvements

The posibility of actually producing portable PDF files, no this isn't a redundant term in Corel's case, as I have examples where I am sure all the Draw 9 PDF export filter is doing is slightly modifying a PostScript print file output to allow a PDF reader to view it, resulting Mega-byte PDF files instead of Kilo-byte PDF files.

I think Corel have kept their promises to listen to the users and refine what they already have, regarding the core packages.

But they still couldn't resist adding just one more package, re: CorelMotion SWF animation tool.

Great for marketing purposes re: Internet design potential, but not I fear a tool that will be used by everyone. A better choice for regular Draw suite users IMHO would have been Corel Knockout, but this was probably too expensive an application to include.

So all in all things look promising.

As a long-time Corel cheerleader, I've often wished that journalists would quit saying that a feature is new to Draw when in fact it's been around for years and is actually being improved, not introduced. For instance, in the Internet Eye preview, the ability to have multiple page sizes in the same document is given this treatment, and in the press release provided by Gary, it would appear that Draw now suddenly has preflighting and PhotoPaint now suddenly has a customizable workspace. Oh well, they can't have people who actually use the software 9 hours a day writing the reviews, now, can they?

And while I'm venting my spleen, I agree with Peter that RAVE is about as likely to replace Flash as CMX was to replace EPS and Barista was to replace PDF. Maybe it's comforting that they have the surplus resources up there in Ottawa to waste on this sort of thing?

With all due respect to any Canadians in the audience, this is at once what is so great and yet so frustrating about having a Canadian counterpart to Adobe: Corel's marketing belief that Draw should be everything in one box is most of the time a great boon to people designing in the real (non ad agency) world. But every few years they do something that shows how completely out of touch they are up there.

A worthwhile trade-off, in my opinion.

I think CorelRAVE is an excellent move. No, it will not kill Flash but it utilizies it's popularity. What could be better than use familiar interface and all the familiar tools when creating Flash intros and animations?

I fully agree with Harri on this one. We could also add CorelTEXTURE and CorelCAPTURE to the list of seemingly "futile" inclusions in the past. But the fact of the matter is that SOMEONE out there will use a lot these features. The person doing print layout will have absolutely no use for RAVE - and that's fine.

But... what of the people that produce on many different formats? To me personally, I think that RAVE will be a very welcome addition - anyone that has tried to use the native art tools in Flash will most likely be fast to admit that they aren't without their shortcomings (although some, I will admit, are pretty nice). Hopefully they'll also incorporate lingo support into RAVE.

I don't use CAPTURE or TEXTURE or TRACE or scripts or the VB addons or the barcodes or the label wizards. But I'm sure that they're valuable tools - and am personally glad that Corel has the family jewels to admit that people are using their program(s) for multiple purposes. They COULD have tunnel vision (Adobe???) and then we'd all be screwed.

But what this all comes down to in the end is that Corel continues to pack one heck of a bundle into what is still a very attractive price point - regardless of what you may or may not use in the package. How many programs do you use that are as powerful as this suite that you can upgrade for less than $300??? The alternative would be to offer everything separately - but then people would complain that they're being nickled & dimed to death. If we had to buy Draw for $300 or $400 and PhotoPaint for another $300, I'm sure "it" would all hit the fan very fast. And when you consider the logistics of designing and producing packaging, then shipping two products as opposed to bundling them in one, I don't think we'd see a huge price break if these extras weren't included.

So... let's all just be happy with the impending new release - I think it sounds like a winner - and I can't wait for November to roll around! [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif[/img]

Your question makes me think maybe my age is showing. Perhaps the world has really gotten to the point where it doesn't matter what software you use, so long as you're fast and elegant. Certainly this is the tao of Internet.

I should mention that I have no trouble using PhotoPaint instead of PhotoShop (largely because of the latter's circa-1990 interface) and that if that same thinking is applied to CorelMotion then good for us!

Still, it's important to keep in mind that Ami Pro was, for one brief summer, a wildly superior product to MS Word, that neither CMX nor Barista are used anywhere outside Corel headquarters, and that the first WYSIWYG HTML editor was called CorelWeb.Design and it never got beyond version 1.

Time will tell, I guess.

This seems like great news!
I own CD7 and have been and continue to be delighted, surprised and amazed by it. In my
view CD7 is a huge “Bang for the Buck�! I was eager to upgrade to CD9 but all the
comments about the tough interface and slow speed put me off.
It is with a great sigh of relief that I read the first review of CD10 because it looks like all I
have hoped for and more in an upgrade. I even bought some Corel stock (not much but
some) [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif[/img] it seems to be a very good buy at the moment!

Howdy folks,

Someone in the office just mentioned R.A.V.E. just an hour or two ago and now my curiousity is up! I feel it would be nice to work in my comfortable Corel environment and port it over to Flash when the time is right.

I guess one of my concerns would be how the file size transposes. When Corel offered their Flash filter a while back, I noticed that the file size really increased once brought over to Flash. But this is a different animal and I'm anxxious to wait and see.
