    Default Google maps widget

    Hello everyone,

I am struggling with a template with a Google maps widget. I search for the place... all ok... then click Insert. Xara gives a warning that I am using an old Google maps version (like I know what to do about that. Am I?) Xara says I will be invited to update to the newer version but I never am and nothing happens. Any ideas, please? Against the clock. SHould I just ignore the widget and insert the code myself?

    Thanks.

    Ali

    Hi Ali

You can try this. Go to Google Maps maps.google.com and enter the address you want to focus on.

Configure the map the way you want it.

    Click Share and then Embed.

Copy the Embed script and place it in a placeholder.

You can edit the size of the map in the Embed script and I should think there are other options as well.

    Hi All
Does this method still work for Xara premium 15?

I am also having trouble inserting bing maps on a page.

From memory, I think I used to create a placeholder first then copy & paste the code from the maps site ie bing or google.

I can't quite remember how to first insert a placeholder & which way round this is done get the code first or open the placeholder?

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks Dave

    Info Re: Google maps widget

For the Xara Google Maps Widget:
    1. Open the Online Content Catalogue > Components and Search: map.
    2. Click the Inset button.
    3. Opens Create new widget: Google Maps.
    4. Navigate to required location, zoom and other settings.
    5. Select from the Hamburger Menu drop-down > share or embed map.
    6. Select Share > Embed a map.
    7. Click COPY HTML link.
    8. Click Create new widget: Google Maps > Insert button.
    9. Click-drag a corner control of the generated Placeholder to scale and position on your design page.

Try pressing the Create new widget: Google Maps > Help button:
-There are two variations to the Google Maps UI. These instructions refer to the new style. You should be prompted to switch to the new style Google map if you are still seeing the old style (without the settings button referred to below).
    - Search for a location using the search bar or click on the button labelled get directions.
    - Enter your start and end address if you require a map displaying directions and click on on the search icon.
    - Adjust map to desired center and zoom level.
    - In the top left corner, click the main menu.
    - Click Share or embed map.
    - At the top of the box that appears, choose the “embed map” tab.
    - Choose the size you want, then copy the code.
    - Click the Insert button below to add the widget to your page.
If that doesn't work, go to Google Maps directly and follow the instructions 4 through 7.
On you design page, add a Rectangle and open is Placeholder > HTML Code (body) and paste from your Clipboard the copied contents.

    For the Bing Maps Widget:

    1. Use More > Embed a map.
    2. New window with lots of map options that you can select.
    3. Press the Generate Code button.
    4. Copy the highlighted code.
    5. Click Create new widget: Google Maps > Insert button.

Thank you for spotting where I sloppily just copied and pasted and failed to reread through.

    Hi Acorn
No problem, I still haven't quite succeeded I cant seem to get the code to copy from Bing & create a placeholder.

I must be doing something wrong.

    I will try again later!

    Regards

    Dave
PS can you recommend a decent form builder (FOC if poss')I just tried Woofu & the doesn't appear to have much adjustment on the size, I just want basic enquiry forms, nothing fancy.

I steer away from Xara's widgets, they can become out of date. Easier just to use a rectangle as a placeholder & paste in either Googles or Bings supplied code:
