I think there are several 30's planes with similar landing gear. They wanted to streamline the fixed gear.

These renders always leave me scratching my head as they look like a well crafted 3D model, but nope...just a great vector rendering!

Do you still fly, Gary. I learned to fly in the sixties, and I haven't flown since the sixties. Strange but true.
