Using the letters TAMPS, I can't get an anagram apart from STAMP, which has already been used.
But, I'd be interested in knowing which anagram you meant, Acorn?

    So, I'm going with:

    SPAT

    FORTY (was the first!)
    ABHORS - ADEPT - ADOPT - ALMOST - BEGIN - BEGINS - BELOW - -BENT - BEST - BOP - CHIMPS - CHINTZ - DEHORT - DEITY - DELTA - DENY - DIRTY - DRAB - EGAD - EGO - EGOS - ELM - EMPTY - EMU - END - ENVY - ERA - ERST - ETA - EVAC - GILT - GLAD - GLOVE - GLOW - GRAB - HI - HIDE - HIJAB - HINZE - HORDE - HORSE - INCH - KEG - KNOB - KNOT - KNOW - KOB - KORA - LAB - LEG - LIKE - LOACH - LOAD - LOCK - LORD - LOST - LOVE - LUCK - MODEL - MORAL - MOREL - MORSEL - MORTAL - MOST - MOTH - MUCH - NAIL - NOPAL - NOPE - NORSE - NORTH - NOVEL - NUDE - OPEN - ORACH - OUCH - OVEN - OVAL - OWL - PACK - PALM - PEG - PRIM - PRUDE - PSALM - PSYCHO - PUCE - PUCK - QUACK - RACK - RADIO - RAMP - RUDE - SAD - SAFER - SAILOR - SPAT - STACK - STAMP - STAR - STEM - STOP - STUCK - STUDIO - STUDY - STUMP - SWAG - SWAMP - SWAN - SWAP - TACKS - TAGS - TAILORS - TAMPS - TENOR - THIN - TINS - TUBER - TUBERS - TUDORS - TUG - TUMORS - TUX - TWAIN - UART - UP - UZBEKS - WADERS - WHILST - WHIST - XU - YACHT - YAM - YELP - YET - YOU - ZIP

Rik, I was being too SMART; I missed STAMP.

As recompense, here's a diagram to help explain Rules 1 to 5:

That's an excellent way of describing some of the rules, Acorn. I like it.

Just realised that SPAT breaks rules 3, 4 and 5 (it actually works if you go backwards) ...

So, where do we go from here .....

I would suggest playing off Rik's LOW which was the last valid word, even though some before are now void, but it's going to get very awkward otherwise ...

The playing field now stands at ...

    FORTY (was the first!)
    ABHORS - ADEPT - ADOPT - ALMOST - BEGIN - BEGINS - BELOW - -BENT - BEST - BOP - CHIMPS - CHINTZ - DEHORT - DEITY - DELTA - DENY - DIRTY - DRAB - EGAD - EGO - EGOS - ELM - EMPTY - EMU - END - ENVY - ERA - ERST - ETA - EVAC - GILT - GLAD - GLOVE - GLOW - GRAB - HI - HIDE - HIJAB - HINZE - HORDE - HORSE - INCH - KEG - KNOB - KNOT - KNOW - KOB - KORA - LAB - LEG - LIKE - LOACH - LOAD - LOCK - LORD - LOST - LOVE - LOW - LUCK - MODEL - MORAL - MOREL - MORSEL - MORTAL - MOST - MOTH - MUCH - NAIL - NOPAL - NOPE - NORSE - NORTH - NOVEL - NUDE - OPEN - ORACH - OUCH - OVEN - OVAL - OWL - PACK - PALM - PEG - PRIM - PRUDE - PSALM - PSYCHO - PUCE - PUCK - QUACK - RACK - RADIO - RAMP - RUDE - SAD - SAILOR - STACK - STAMP - STAR - STEM - STOP - STUCK - STUDIO - STUDY - STUMP - SWAG - SWAMP - SWAN - SWAP - TACKS - TAGS -TAIL- TAILORS - TAMPS - TENOR - THIN - TINS - TUBER - TUBERS - TUDORS - TUG - TUMORS - TUX - TWAIN - UART - UP - UZBEKS - WADERS - WHILST - WHIST - XU - YACHT - YAM - YELP - YET - YOU - ZIP

Sitting down with the callipers, even now, and rechecking. Suitably chastised.

Happy to accept a new rule to forfeit a go for every word created after the fault is discovered.

    I can't believe I put up SPAT !

Ah! I've worked out why I did.
It was because TAMPS was put up and it was said that there was an anagram. So, I was only looking at that word and all I could make was SPAT.
Not for a moment stopping to think about the rules!!!

A very big oops on my part!

Well done for keeping an eye on things, Mikey.
