I've used the word "painterly" in several books, and never got flagged by en editor!

Actually, that's a preset I tinkered with in the latest edition of Alien Skin's Snap Art (v4), light years ahead of previous versions.

Indeed, yes. I think the stand-alone is also and Adobe-standard plug-in, which meas if you havew the $$$, you can work with it in Xara.

This is Filter Factory, the fake HDRI preset. It took some Photoshop work to hide certain areas on a layer with the original.

It would be nice if we had an effect like that in Xara v12.

There is always FotoSketcher as well. While not part of XDP, it can be used to great effect on bitmaps exported from an Xara application.

This was an experiment in color and form--I consider it melting wax.

One image is of a part of the original as created, the other one using one of the many effects available.

The success of a filtered image is entirely dependent on the original image, and the eye...which knobs you twiddle to get the effect the photo needs.

Without fail, filters remove some of the original photo. If the filter works, it's because the stuff it adds is better than the source data that's lost.

I played with a photo of my brother, who did a fair impression of Teddy Roosevelt, but not perfect. So I turn it into a painting and the audience sort of forgets the falseness of the image:
