I need to mix left to right and right to left (hebrew) text in a textbox. How can I do that? If I copy/paste hebrew text the text is inserted as if it was left to right, that is: reversed. Can I somehow work around that?

Welcome to TalkGraphics.
I do not think Xara can do text that goes from right to left. This question has come up from time to time and I do not get the feeling that this is ever going to be supported. From a programming point of view it is a major problem.

To me it would already be fine, if the paste logic would interpret the 2 unicode signs for changing text direction from RTL and LTR. I do not expect Xara Designer to provide Editing Functionality with RTL. I can easily write my text in e.g. Windows Text Editor (which allows RTL) and copy/paste.
The only thing Xara Designer has to do would be to reverse character sequence for parts inside the RTL/LTR codes during paste. This does not sound to me like a major programming issue.
There is finally a solution to this problem:
www.rtlfixer.com
Supports Hebrew, Arabic and a few other languages. continuous typing and also in copy/paste.
Look at that! If it works, that could be a great solution for many worldwide.
would it help me drive in the EU... not that I drive in the UK, but that's academic

I am also adding a video showing it is working with Hebrew and Arabic:
