I dual booted the Win10 preview and did not like it. I participated in many conversations on the preview forums, and while some issues got responses from MS personnel (I was downright shocked that they actually read the forums) many, many issues were ignored.
A week before the deadline, I upgraded my PC. I tried to upgrade my 2007 laptop, but the download failed 7 times, so I gave up. I have a retail "Family Plan" version of 7, so by upgrading the one machine I can upgrade 3 under the same license. I will not do so until I am forced to do so.
A lot of people are raving about tememetry, spying and whatnot. I imagine those same people have iOS or Android phones that do exactly the same thing and have done so from the beginning. Microsoft is just trying to catch up with mobile tech in this issue. I don't like it, but this is the way unregulated industry works.

Last Saturday, I moved back to 7. Why?
*Every time I started a game, I saw a message that my camera and mic were turned on and recording so I could share my gaming experience. I don't have a mic or camera.
*The classic games from Win95 to Win7 were removed (Solitaire, Free Cell, Spider, etc.). The possible replacements from the MS store are horrible. In preview, we asked MS to offer the classic games, we even said we were fine with paying for them, but a dev said that they would not, and could not run on 10. (A lie, as I used third party software to install the Win7 games on 10).
*Cortana, constantly running a service to access my mic, which does not exist, and asking me to turn it on. Cortana searching the entire web but not able to find a file on my computer.
*CONSTANT prompts to use touch optimized features and services when I don't have a touch screen.
*Defaulting to battery saving and process saving features when I have an 850 watt power supply and gaming hardware fully capable of running at high speed. I am not on a laptop, but the OS is defaulting to treat my machine like a laptop or phone.
*Forcing defaults to MS programs. I received an e-mail in gmail. Opened it on Chrome. The attachment would not download because Edge could not open. WHY do I need Edge open to download a file from e-mail? The PDF version? REQUIRED to download to OneDrive, NOT on my device. I could not download this document until I went back to 7.

Win10 is a cobbled together mess designed for mobile devices with touch interface that they then threw a few desktop options on. I hate it. If game developers ever port the games I play to another platform, I will never use Windows again.

I'm sorry to hear about your mishaps. I somewhat feared them too before I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro (from Windows 7 Pro) a week before the deadline but none happened. On the contrary, I find that Windows 10 is better than v. 7. Faster, prettier, better organized and I don't get any intrusive messages or notifications. Perhaps because of the settings I selected. During installation I also switched all the Cortana (and privacy) related settings to 'Off' because I don't want my computer to talk to me or me talk to it.

All my peripherals, including a 15-year old scanner, work like a charm. You mention Solitaire. It was actually not included in Windows 7 but Microsoft reintroduced it in v. 10. I use Chrome as my default internet browser but have no issues with downloading and/or opening files. Edge was started up sometimes when trying to open a file but I just changed the settings in "How do you want to open this file?" after right-clicking the file. I also don't experience any bias toward touch-screen devices. The OS works perfectly on my desktop and I find almost everything is customizable to my liking.

You guessed it, I really like Windows 10 and am happy that I upgraded -- for free! Again, I'm sorry to hear that your experience is so negative but there might be other reasons for it than Windows 10 itself, or Microsoft. I think they did an excellent job.

I installed Win 10 on my wife's laptop a couple of weeks back. No issues.

She not complained once about Win 10. It just works.

It's inevitable that for some people something is going to go wrong, but I've heard remarkably few complaints about it ( unlike Windows 8 ).

    i've had the opposite experience
done at least a dozen installs or reinstalls of windows 7
as they say, horses for courses

(currently installing 7 on a vista laptop so just removed gwx from the registry)

    amazing but true
just a day after i post the above i have a virtually brand new asus pc win 10 pre-installed
worked fine (so, like, 3 months) until it decided to do the aug 6 update:

(it's in french, it means dear sir your pc is b*ggered)

(it's in french, it means the update we just installed didn't work so we're going back to before the update
however since you cannot switch off windows update this will just continue with an infinite loop of blue screens
you'll probably need an i.t. specialist to sort our mess out, get your wallet out)

    infinite loop bsod

so I fiddle to get past that and decide to do a simple system restore but i forget that system restore is disabled by default in windows 10!
that's like saying the seat belts are in the boot/trunk, if you want to use them just we have provided a spanner
what it actually says is microsoft is so confident it doesn't think you need it
system restore is absolutely indispensible!! what were they thinking??
like numlock is enabled in the bios but windows 10 switches it back off when it starts up!

    what
    were
    they
    thinking???

windows 10 is a nightmare, it's just that most people are completely oblivious
if you are happy with windows 10 it's because
    a) it hasn't crashed on you yet
    b) you're a techie and you know what you're doing

i love windows 10, it just keeps the customers coming back time and again
but nothing would make me put it on my workstations unless it's a vm for test purposes

just my opinion based on dozens of tech support jobs
If someone tried to make me dig my own grave I would say No.

I feel your pain, Frank. I put up with many issues with 10 for some time until I realised it was getting in the way of my normal workflow.
Mainly Permission issues.- You do not have permission to do this blah, blah, blah... I would have to shut down and restart to clear out the pile of rubbish clogging up the PC.
Then Windows became even more costive, Not letting me delete folders even after I'd restarted the system, and not letting me remove external hard drives and other stuff too numerous to mention.
I hung on until the Anniversary update became available, which fixed nothing, so I went back to the relative sanity of Windows 8.1 before the cut off date for being able to do so. As they say, "I've never looked back."
    Bob.
