What you cannot do without manual tweaking are the radiused corners. Still need to overlay, add points and radius them.

I think I know what you're talking about, Mike.

What I did was to use a star shape with rounded corners, to cut those bits out of the shapes.

Sorry I'm late getting back in here to comment.
    Great tutorial Egg.
Mike, great input from you as well.
EDIT: Rik you posted while I was, thank you for your illuminating input.

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.

    Yes, more or less.

It's at times like this I need to evaluate--and discuss with the client--whether to keep the organic, not perfect appearance of the original versus correcting geometry and the parts that deviate from the others.

Personally, my vote would be for retaining the organic inconsistencies.

Logo like this would be perfect example as a suitable image for autotracing, if it already exists in bitmap form and has decent enough resolution.

Just tried it. AI auto-traces it well. CD does OK. Tried in XDP and the first attempt crashed XDP. Second attempt created an ungodly number of nodes and isn't worth the effort.

But really, if one has the fonts, the only portion that needs redrawn is the Star which only takes a couple minutes to do and would be good practice--whether for a beginner to drawing vector or to keep one's skills sharp. Bank Gothic is the lower text. I have seen the main text before but cannot remember the font.

As peeps seemed to like the creating a star video I thought I'd take it to the next step, using the vectors to create the 3D effect and the difference between Xara Designer / Web Designers 3D effect and that offered by Xara 3D Maker 7.

    Yes, Mike.
I don't know what that top font is either. I've used something that's close enough - it's called Penguin.
One thing I can't agree with you on, is when you say, "the only portion that needs redrawn is the Star which only takes a couple minutes to do".
It took me, more than a few minutes!

It took me ≤ 3 minutes to draw the star. It took more time to load the PSD into Illy, trace it, then bring it into XDP. Although I did keep the traced main logo text and reset the Bank Gothic as text.

But it ain't a race--I know you agree with that . What was good for me, though, is more practice in drawing something other than the boring stuff I do draw.

Ah, yes, Peignot. So overused back in the 1990s I must have blocked it from my mind! Well, perhaps. Else I was too lazy to search my database...and it is one of the only lazy Saturdays I have had for a while.
