Gary is right - the test for clicking inside a rectangle is far simpler than clicking in a complex shape.

Often UI designers will use a hit area (ie where you click) that is slightly larger than the graphic shape that you see because you shouldn't force the user to be precise when their intention to click the button/shape is known. If the user is on a phone or tablet they cannot be precise.

It's not about the shape, it's about the intention.

Good points Paul and Gary but I suspect Alice's post was just part of a prelude to an SEO advertising injection. (Within the space of a few minutes he or she resurrected several old threads, replied to lots of different topics without saying much, and included the SEO link in the final post.)
