First off there really is no way to completely remove the noise but you can reduce it. To be honest I have a dedicated photo editing program I'd use for this but you can use Xara and definitely make improvements. Start by adjusting the brightness of the entire photo. You can use the blur slider to slightly blur the entire photo but be careful to do this only slightly Now create a region around the face by using the shape tool to create a detailed black shape over the face and make sure to cut out the eyes and mouth. cut this shape to the clipboard (ctrl + X) then select the region painter and just select the photo with it and nothing else. use the keyboard shortcut ctrl+shift+v to paste in place and the shape you created and cut to the clipboard comes back in as a region. Now you can smooth out just her face and further remove the noise from her face.

That's about the best I could get it Ron, as Francis says you can't get rid of the hatching but you can try and cover it up various ways. I will try and cover up the red at the top of her ear.

Hi Ron, I am certainly no expert but I like to play with different software. Here is my attempt, I used Paint shop pro X6 and In pixio photo maximizer 3

Hi Ron when I did a search for Paint Brush it came out a a Mac based app and was described as m/s Paint for the Mac. Don't know if that is the one your talking about? Have you not tried Gimp? that's a great free bitmap editor and you can easily do most P/Shop tasks in it, even Steve's lightroom is a lot better. Now I would treat the screen in the photo as a Noire effect and as Frances states without spending hours & hours on it you can improve it not remove it. Now I would use LAB colour space for this job and it is described in the PDF on page 2 under the heading "Fixing severe moire using L*a*b color". Now you can use Gimp for this but it is a bit hidden "Colors > Components > Decompose. From the color model dropdown list, select LAB.". Then all you need to do is to follow the description given in the PDF: http://creativetechs.com/courses/pho...lAnomalies.pdf
    Design is thinking made visual.

Peter- I really appreciate the information. I do have Gimp and I'll do my best to follow your instructions. Again, thank you!

I think that correcting this kind of problem (moire patterns) is one of the hardest things to do.
