But did you make it without joining the shapes to create the holes? (See image below and the difference of upper and lower gear.)

Correct shape of the teeth is actually pretty hard to draw and is easier to trace from the reference picture, so i traced it. I could also have cheated and use little utility to generate different gear symbols, including the teeth with reference point already set, but that would have been too obvious.

But images created in CAD systems, are created in a completely different way than those in Xara. I'm not sure what you are trying show in your posts ....?

And here I thought this thread was about using Xara products. Silly me.

Vectors are still vectors regardless of the software and the another image showing gears was not even from CAD software, so the point was?

If there is possibility to export or import files then why would not anyone do so? If you export stuff from Xara into some 3D modeller, do you still think that paths are created entirely different in 3D modellers and because of that there is no point doing so?

For example, why would it be any different to bring something to Xara instead of taking something out? these days It is possible to exchange files between different applications pretty freely and those export/import options are not just for decoration anymore.

I'm not arguing that bringing stuff into an Xara product is not valid...I do it all the time. I just try to do the tutorials geared at using an Xara product actually using their product is all.

ermm..i thought the point of the thread was finding different ways to divide a space quickly and efficiently into segments in such a way that it is flexible and easy to replicate using Xara. sure i could pop open my ancient cad program trace, copy a million times, etc and then pull that image into Xara which by then is pretty much a static image. now that i have that "tooth" as a brush i honestly made that bottom roller track in under two minutes. cad (and what you're excellently showing) is perfect and precise for engineers but in a graphics forum that vector image is gonna fall a little short. especially now that my 10 year old has seen this and has grabbed my laptop from me to make those gears into a gif. not trying to debate, just sayin'....

It was supposed to be basic as no one would actually draw anything like that. If topic is offshoot, then why shoot people if they go little offtopic.

Belt like that would need only 2 circles and geometric/co-tangent tool + multicopy/follow item.

    Edit: more anatomically correct belt.

I think this thread is going a little awry.

I always use a reference image. The single tooth of the gear was drawn / copied / blend applied around a circle / rotated around circle / 73 steps / as per Garys blend routine.

The holes were drawn, cloned and rotated 60 degrees x 5 times.

The inner "bushes" are just 2 circles selected and subtracted shapes.

I can't see what the advantage/disadvantages of not "using any booleans/compound shapes, or any support for holes in shapes"?

I also have no issue with importing vectors from other programs if it suits.

The important point is not how you do it, the important point is does it work!

Anyway here's my total Xara gear.

Same vector, pasted into Xara3D7 and the above texture applied.

heh....nobody is shooting anyone. just that the thread is for creating a segmented object for creating a posterboard advertisement without relying on outside sources coupled with the ability to make changes on the fly without redesigning the wheel (pun intended ) i can color, add teeth, change pitch, and anything else you can think of within seconds now that the basic design is done and without going between several programs. obviously there's more than one way to accomplish all of this and there isn't any one wrong way but i'm not sending my drawing out to a cnc machining center.

(by the way, thx for helping me get my post count up to get past that ridiculous minimum count rule. good thing this "offshoot" is sorta off-topic and the OP doesn't mind )

(also, my 10 yr old just did the snowmobile belt with only a little guidance )

EDIT: VERY nice work Mr. B!! A bit over my paygrade
