Hi Larry, A Happy New Year To You.
This was made using XDP9 and Illustrator. The letter "D" was made using a rounded rectangle and the background a blend of lines. The inner part of the "D" was originally a linear fill. I took the finished XDP artwork into Illustrator and used the Astute Graphics plugin, "Phantasm" to make a vector halftone effect of the linear fills. Finally everything was tweaked with the Roughen Effect to achieve a hand drawn effect.
Edit: A non rough version added.
    Bob.

Thank you ankhor. I can't add to anything Rik said because he said it all. Splendid job.

That's a beauty Crow. You guys are getting so creative with these, and I like it. I have been collecting all the members work of these drop caps, but don't know yet what I'll do with them. I know what I want to do is post them all as a set.

Something a little different this time. Made in Illustrator with the pen tool, and a lot of help from the Vectorscribe2 plugin from Astute Graphics, which contains an Extend Paths tool. This allows one to create extended bezier curves and spirals with ease.
