Default Simple Illustrator task - placing an image as a background

    Hello all,

As you'll probably tell by this question, I'm very new to using AI. However, I;ve been tasked with a small graphic project at work and I can't figure out how to do a very simple image coloring task.

i am trying to color something with a gold color.. because of the metal shade and shadow, the easiest way for me to do this is to insert an existing image I have of the color "gold" as the color of the image in illustrator. I can't figure out how to get this done. it seems like the ordering of the layers plays a part, but any clear instructions would be much appreciated.

to review, i am trying to insert an image as the background of an existing graphic.

    thank you for your help!

When you say an Image, is it a bitmap (jpeg, png or gif) or is it a vector shape or drawing. Hope I am not late here as I have been away skiing for a week.
    Design is thinking made visual.
