Can't erase Shapes?

Hi again, all - and a Merry Christmas to you!

I'm using my Xara Designer Pro X10, and liking it - but I've noticed something kind of aggravating...the eraser won't work on Shapes. Say that I draw a circle - I give it a black outline, use the "no color" option as a fill, and then try to erase a bit of the black outline. Well, all that happens is that the eraser shoves the line around a little - but it won't erase it! What's the deal? Does anyone know?

Well, it does sometimes. Other times the line I'm trying to erase just sort of bends around the eraser - but it won't erase. :P

I don't think so. I have my images on layers, and the shapes I'm using - in this case, dialogue balloons, and frames around scenes - are on separate layers.

I can erase anything else just fine - it's just when I use the Shapes tool to create dialogue balloons and scene frames; THOSE I can't erase. Just push the edges around.

Edited to add: Also, the Line Gallery doesn't entirely work for me. I need to create a dialogue balloon with a dotted line around it - to indicate whispering - and I can make a dotted-line circle using the Shapes tool - but I can't DRAW a dotted line. When I try to drag-and-drop a dotted line from the Line Gallery, or use Apply, nothing happens.

As I mentioned, I don't have v10...

Try converting it to an editable shape. Then use the eraser, shape builder or what ever. Should be able to use a dashed line then, too.

My Eraser tool works fine in XDP X10.
Whether I erase the original shape, or convert it to editable shape.

Might be worth doing a repair/install.
Failing that, raise a support ticket.

i think you may be confusing erasing fill with erasing outline - it will erase fill as mike showed even when the fill is transparent, but it wont erase the outline there always has to be an outline so it reforms around the erased fill

you can make the outline wholly transparent, but I think you want to make a gap in it.. if so you need to select your no-fill outline, click 'convert line to shape' [arrange menu], and then you can erase [again as mike said, except convert line to shape is the required option]

[technically - you need to make the outline the shape, at the moment it is just an outline]

as far as dotted lines go - make sure nothing is selected - then in the line gallery click on the dotted line you want and then click the apply button - this should now be set as default line to draw

be aware, if your line is of small width you may not see the dashes unless you zoom in if they are spaced close together

Looking at what Steve says in his post, this is what I get.
Everything works as expected.
