In my opinion, when we look at things that our sight can see easily (what I mean is that your eyes don't have to travel far to see the whole thing) we tend to look at the top half of that thing.
And, if there are words in the image, then I think we tend to read those first (or very quickly). Even if the words are in a foreign language.

But, I'm no psychologist, so don't take my view as any sort of authority!

But, I'd be interested in others' opinions and if there are experts around, please lets hear from you.

Interesting thoughts, Rik. In both versions of the images I saw people first. I wonder if maybe, since researchers have said we are hardwired from birth to focus on faces and we recognize these shapes even in other objects, that this attribute could contribute to seeing people in those images first....

I actually saw column people in seconds then decyphered they were separate...I scan sideways and on most things can be found squinting at them...so then I went back to your image and now I see column first then people. Anything to train the eye brain has to be good for you...I'm hoping anyway))
