Variants Overkill

Hi all!

Could really use your input with this one.

I like the swipe feature of a supersite with scale to fit and am hoping to fill most screens if possible in landscape and portrait mode.

Please visit the following website (read: website template) and let me know if it picks the appropriate variant for your device.

To accomplish this there are actually 8 different variants for various devices in this particular template I created... Overkill perhaps?

Using a Moto G on Android, I get the Phone Vertical #1 in portrait. When I change the phone orientation, it switches to Tablet Vertical #3

On my desktop it picks up the desktop variant. On my ipad it picks up both the portrait & landscape versions correctly. On my mobile (HTC Android) it picks up the phone vertical okay but picks up the iphone horizontal when rotated.

However Xara sites aren't truely responsive, just giving various fixed sized versions. Not even sure if they can determine which mode the appliance is in, landscape or portrait (But in your example it appears to work for the ipad). Not really my area of expertise however.

Well iPhone horizontal is not bad since you are holding it horizontal.
Really want to eliminate showing a vertical when holding it horizontal and vice versa!

I admit I'd like to see that too. My HTC is 320 x 480. I'd like to create 2 variants, one 320 wide & one 480 wide and have Xara serve up whichever was appropriate depending on the phones orientation. Not sure how Xara handles this. In the past I've done it via .htacess but I'm unaware of Xara's code in identifying browser type/OS etc.

Well yes that is unavoidable. Since you change the width of the 'screen'.

But people usually don't change the browser window during normal use,

And this won't be an issue on any other device... Unless you make the mobile browser smaller.

Can't see this happening all that often either.

on my 1920 x 1080 desktop, version 8, perfect display,
on my 1024 x 768 desktop, version 6, perfect display,
on my 10" compaq netbook, version 7, perfect display,
on my samsung wave s8500, version 1, but r/h black square cut off,
when i flip to horizontal i get version 2, perfect display

That's 4 out of 5... Not bad at all!

Wonder why it gets cut off though. It's supposed to scale to fit.

Hmmm... Looks like your phone Big Frank runs the Bada mobile platform?

Maybe that could be the reason? It should have worked. Variant 1 is only 400pix wide.
