can't get clone tool to work

I've watch 3 videos. In each, the presenter selects the clone tool, draws around the offending object, creating a closed loop with the "marching ants." The tool becomes the clone icon and one simply drags a preferred area of photo over the offending object. Except my clone tool won't drag anything...

HA ok figured it out. I was trying to remove a small blemish. So the tool worked fine on larger areas. So for the blemish I just hit the Magic Erase button and it worked.
