And one can also add to a typical "holes" grunge with lines, styled by a pressure profile.
Here I simply scribbled a bunch of lines using the freehand and brush tool, added a pressure profile, changed the line weight to what I wanted, converted the lines to shapes, duplicated, joined them together and placed them over the first grunged text. Selected both, then Subtracted.

Rik, you need to keep in mind that not everyone uses Xara products and that Adobe's (and others) import filters may not accept certain elements made in Xara and will represent them as bitmaps. As a general rule, solid fills and simple (not repeating) linear gradients should be fine. The same applies in reverse, for example a mesh fill created in Illustrator or Serif Draw Plus will only import into Xara as raster. It's nobody's fault, but they don't speak the same language, or rather they both speak English, but sometimes they are divided by a common language, like us and our American cousins.
You can be fairly sure that the more complex a graphic is, the less likely it will play nicely in other applications.
Mike in post # 13 shows some of what can be done to create pure vector grunge.
The attached Mini Tutorial shows that using Xara's bitmap trace utility vector results can be obtained using complex raster fills.
The .xar file is attached.

Here's an example of using other software in conjunction with Xara. I have used Livebrush (free) to make the ink splats for this.
The font has been mutilated using the Eraser Tool.

Bob: I opened your .xar file in Post #15.
Selected your fractal cloud fill.
Opened the Bitmap Tracer within Xara.
But...
I could not find a setting to give me the same great looking effect you got.
Can you give me an idea as to what settings you used?

@ Rik, Here's a screen grab of the settings I used (as near as I can remember, anyway). I also squashed the vector result about 50% vertically when clipping it into the text.
@ Zsolt, Glad you enjoyed the Mini Tutorial.
Bob.

Thanks for trying, Bob.
I can't get it to look like your original.
