If you would like a perfect image, which even has support for levels of transparency, then I would reccomend a PNG file.

By pure, I assume you mean that the files don't use any compression methods that are 'lossy', or discard data to reduce size (such as a JPEG would).

BMP's are a lossless image system, but the file sizes can become unweildly, and they don't support any form of transparency.

TIFF's are another lossless format, and is commonly used.

It all comes down to compatability issues - what will the image be used for?

I would reccomend either TIFF or PNG - with PNG the best option if you can use it.
