At least a problem in my own installation.
Any of the PDF profiles highlighted in the box in the screen shot fail to produce a drop shadow. The others do.

This has been recognized as a bug. A way to make it show up is to pick the PDFX-1a profile, then change the PDF Version Compatibility to one of the above types.
