    was your windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit ?

P&G9 came out in 2013 so I reckon it was 32-bit only, but cannot recall for sure; windows 10 did not launch until 2015

whether your OS is 32-bit or 64-bit almost certainly makes little difference to X5 because it dates from a time when OS were 'simple', but P&G9 is likley to have routines and optimisations that are tailtored for win7, not win10; compatibility mode is not guaranteed to fix all these; win 10 now being 64-bit only may compound this - sure the program will run, but not as well as it should perhaps

you have checked you RAM as well as your disks ?

yes, i have checked ram and disks (i have other graphics programs i use with no issues)

thanks for the info on windows version differences (95% of the time i use linux, but i have to start from scratch with designs and it just works quicker in windows)

my windows 10 cannot even keep time properly, every time i open it the time defaults to 9 hours later (i've tried everything recommended online to no avail)
in my eyes it is terrible compared to windows 7, and downright abysmal compared to any linux i have run

sounds like your windows 10 laptop is set to wrong time zone - if you cannot get windows 10 settings to correct this, then it may be a UEFI/BIOS setting overiding windows

Right click the date/time in your task bar (bottom right of your screen) and click Adjust Date/Time.
Make sure your Time Zone is set to the correct time zone and not Reykjavik or whatever.

yes, you would think that would work
it's possible something else is overriding it, but that would be unusual in a stand alone personal laptop I would have thought

    just a quick update

still no time zone accuracy (no matter what i choose/change)

whenever i login to my wifi network the windows antimalware gobbles up 80-100% of my ram making the computer unusable
i have tried every available setting/policy/registry/program/etc to no avail
every time the computer re-boots windows overrides all my previous work

maybe i just got a lemon, or windows 10 is just that bad
    i think i will re-install windows 7

thanks to all for the help

windows 10 is not that bad, but it is very different to window 7; maybe your installation was spiked...

Did you try restarting your computer? I find doing so solves many problems.

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.
